Claudio Mele took part in an event on identity and care in Italy

On March 21, 2026, Claudio Mele took part in Identità in crisi: la cura e il soggetto nello scenario contemporaneo — “Identity in Crisis: Care and the Subject in the Contemporary World” — in Monza, Italy. The event was organized by the Order of Physicians and Dentists of the Province of Monza and Brianza.

His presentation explored “The identity of the care provider and the patient: the patient’s and therapist’s crises as an opportunity for a therapeutic encounter.” The topic invited reflection on how experiences of crisis affect both participants in the therapeutic relationship and may create opportunities for connection, listening and understanding.

The programme broadened this discussion to include the fragmentation of the self in contemporary life, the complexity of caring relationships and care as an encounter beyond protocols. Other themes included the place of not knowing, freedom from fixed identities, and the relationships between the crisis of the symbolic, difference and the formation of the subject.

Bringing together perspectives from different fields and an interdisciplinary roundtable, the event focused on the relational dimensions of care and a more humane approach to practice. Claudio’s participation contributed to this dialogue on the challenges contemporary life presents to patients and practitioners.
